Candidates considered for the IFPSM Lewis E. Spangler - Purchasing Professional Award have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the profession of purchasing, materials management and logistics, substantiated by their positive contribution to the bottom line of their companies or associations as well as the support they gave to their collaborators in the field of education and training.

This award is presented annually to one or two persons, recognised by an awards committee as having rendered an outstanding contribution to our profession.

History of the Lewis E. Spangler - Purchasing Professional Award

Lewis E. Spangler was born in 1908 in the USA. For 30 years Lew Spangler served the US General Services Administration in Washington, DC until his retirement from the position of Deputy Commissioner of the Federal Supply Service. The second stage of his career started with NIGP - the National Institute for Governmental Purchasing, where he continued to advise federal, state/provincial and local Officials on procurement management strategies. He was the driving force behind the implementation of a general certification programme based on a common body of knowledge in Procurement and Materials Management in the public and private sectors.

Lew Spangler was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Coalition of Procurement Standards and has served as a Member of the Executive Committee of the IFPSM - the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management. He received numerous citations and awards, including GSA's Administrators Exceptional Service Award, NIGP's coveted Albert H. Hall Award and the IFPSM's Garner-Thèmoin Medal. Spangler was an exceptionally successful practitioner of Purchasing and Materials Management and a strong supporter of the IFPSM, to which he showed outstanding committment especially during a time when the Federation's stability and future appeared threatened.
