New Global Standard for Purchasing and Supply Programs Announced
Global benchmark sets forth clear, objective criteria for assessment and recognition of educational programs in purchasing and supply management.
5 MARCH 2012 - Associations and organizations can now certify the relevance and integrity of their educational programs in purchasing and supply management against an internationally recognized benchmark for degrees, credentials and certifications. The new Global Standard for Professional Competence in Purchasing and Supply, created by the Global Standards Board, evaluates degree equivalent programs against clear and transparent criteria for content, delivery and assessment.
Regional and international institutes and organizations that seek program recognition and embark on the evaluation and documentation process will have their programs measured against a fixed core of standard purchasing and supply learning objectives against which individual learning elements can be measured. Program review will include assessment by an independent assessor.
According to Global Standards Board Chair and Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Senior Vice President Nora P. Neibergall, CPSM, C.P.M., CPSD, flexibility in the assessment framework takes into account sector-specific topics and regional requirements. “The evaluation process focuses on the rigor and quality of a delivered program. This concentration on assessed outcomes creates a level playing field for organizations of all sizes and geographic locations,” Neibergall says.
According to IFPSM Director General and Global Standards Board Member Charles Holden, the Global Standard will allow organizations to substantiate the quality of their programs free of commercial subjectivity. “The marketplace needs an independent, objective benchmark as a well a globally relevant focus for development of programs,” Holden says. “The Global Standard delivers that objectivity and focus for programs, resulting in international recognition of qualifications.”
The core of the Global Standard is purchasing and supply content delivered at a degree level or equivalent to a bachelor’s degree/3rd Level qualification. The Global Standard is overseen by the Global Standards Board and administered by the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM).
